| CANNOVATION
- A Grand Success The 2nd INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR
ON PACKAGING, held on 8th November 2005 at Taj Lands End,
Mumbai, INDIA was a grand success.
CANNOVATION deliberated on the state of art in Tinplate Packaging in
the World. Special focus was on innovation, consumer convenience and cost effectiveness
related to metal packaging in India. In an age when packaging is increasingly gaining
importance in determining the "value" of a product, CANNOVATION provided
valuable insights on the issues, from a global perspective.
The inaugural session of the Seminar was addressed by a Galaxy
of Speakers including Welcome address by Mr. B L Raina, Chairman Tinplate
Promotion Council (TPC), Packaging Overview by Mr. Rajiv Dhar, Director,
Indian Institute of Packaging (IIP), Mr. Philippe Wolper, MD APEAL, Key Note
address on behalf of Mr. B M Vyas, MD GCMMF by Dr S Bhalla of AMUL. In
his address, the Chief Guest, Mr. B. Muthuraman, Managing Director TATA STEEL,
emphasised the need for all stakeholders of the long Tinplate Value Chain to work
together, to become competitive. He expressed that innovative and cost effective solutions
to meet the needs of discerning end-consumers will be the key to success.
The 2nd session was entitled "CAN-INNOVATION
- A Global scan" and was addressed by Mr. Philippe Wolper, who
brought in the Global Perspective of Steel Cans and the effectiveness of Steel Cans, Mr.
Olivier Magon of Arcelor, talked about Winning Strategies from steel / tinplate makers
towards CAN-INNOVATION, while Mr. Evert Wan Deweg, talked on Delivering brand
differentiation through CAN-INNOVATION.
The 3rd and 4th sessions were on
"DRIVING INNOVATION THROUGH THE VALUE CHAIN". Some of the talks were on
Cost Justified Systems to Produce Cans or Closures with Flexibility by Mr. Carl
Hoying, New Features & Applications, Tools and Techniques for Metal Cans by Mr.
Werner, Can-innovation Through World Class Metal Printing by Mr. Derrick
Straka, on Consumer Convenience by Mr. Lans Herbert,
Can-innovation Through Teaming Up with Alternate Media by Bericaps,
amongst others.
The 5th session brought to light the Indian perspective
through interesting talks namely on Building Consumer Mind Space for the 'Can' by Mr.
N Muthukumaran, The Changing Indian Consumer: Edible Oils Case Study by Mr.
Siraj Choudhury and Implications of Change: The INDIA - BHARAT
canvas by Mr. Pradeep Dutt. India is all set to emerge as the food
factory to the world - given its vast potential of fruits, vegetables, dairy, marine and
agricultural products. Global marketing of these products would largely depend on our
ability to provide these in packaging forms that will not only ensure freshness of the
product but also meet consumer convenience and stringent WTO compliant environmental
regulations.
The septuagenarian Mr. Manu Bhai Shah
dwelled upon the necessity of Consumer Movement in building credible self-sustaining
systems to meet human requirements. He gave lucid insights into Consumer
perspective on tinplate packaging.

| THE EXHIBITION ADDED NEW PERSPECTIVES IN CAN MAKING A
concurrent exhibition organized during CANNOVATION received overwhelming response from the
delegates. The exhibitors included both national and international participants. The exhibition,
was inaugurated by Mr. B Muthuraman, the Chief Guest for the event, and showcased
the state of art in Tinplate Value Chain.
The seminar and the exhibition brought together senior decision makers from the
government and industry, besides national and international experts in the field, and
facilitated meaningful interface on the current and future needs of the metal packaging
industry. The seminar reemphasized that Tinplate, the "green" packaging medium
is not only safe for products, but is totally recyclable and renewable. Moreover, with its
excellent printability, Tinplate ensures a distinct brand differentiation.

India
Pack 2004
The Indian Institute of Packaging, organised Indiapack 2004, a World
Packging Exhibition and Conference in Mumbai from October 26 to 29, 2004. The objective of
the exhibition was to curb the global challenges faced by the world of packaging. Tata
Tinplate led the initiative to create awareness on the various eco-friendly packaging
mediums available.
The company set up two stalls with extensive information on
tinplate. They acted as a medium to facilitate better understanding as well as opened up
business avenues for the various ecofriendly food packaging mediums that the company has
to offer. A seminar and entertainment programme accommodated in the three-day long event,
ensured that the interest of the participants, especially customers never waned. The
Managing Director Mr B L Raina, also attended the conference and addressed a session with
other foreign deligates.

| Aahar 2005 As in past years, Tata Tinplate once again participated at Aahar
2005, an Annual International Exhibition for Food, Food Processing, Equipments and
Supplies, organized by India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO) at Pragati Maidan, New
Delhi. The event was held during 9 13 March 2005. The display by TCIL received
tremendous response from the visitors and was successful in creating awareness about
Tinplate being a cost effective, healthy packaging medium for food items and processed
foods. The exhibition brought TCIL facetoface with potential end-users viz.
packagers of quality basmati rice, fruit juices and other food processors. |
