Retail Scenario in India

India has added 930 billion USD to its economy since last 10 years and it is expected to multiply 3 times in the next 10 years. The consumption in India amounts to 795 billion USD wherein retail accounts for 435 billion USD which in turn divides into 55% spend in urban India and balance 45% in rural India. However , organized retail accounts to only 5 % of the available pie.

With GDP expected to triple in the coming decade coupled with changing consumers’ behaviour, the modern retail is expected to grow by approx. 10 times.

Current market shows a good visibility to new trends in the retailers’ market i.e., manufactures opening their own outlets, dominance of pure play retailers, entry of world biggies in Indian market and private labels establishing their foothold.

Compounded by both the pace of development in retail and brand, the fast evolving life style changes of the consumers are deciding the future of Indian retail. The changes in Indian retail and consumer’s end are happening at such a fast pace that latent demand for quality products and services in India, remains untapped.

Indian consumers’ busy day schedules has led weight to one important factor -shortage of time. This has become a major concern for a common man today and concepts like “ All under one roof”, “Online buying” and “Ready to eat” are gaining the say in Indian retail market. It is therefore very important for Indian retailers’ and related industries to anticipate the change and innovate to meet the consumer’s growing needs.

Retail Leadership Summit (RLS)-2011, An Overview

India is a nation of shopkeepers with innovative competencies to delight customers. The evolutionary process has been quite exciting for modern retailers. Keeping this in mind, modern retailers have to re-examine the traditional methods of retailing, constantly upgrade processes and practices and develop them, in order to increase their market share. In doing so and in response to such experiences, there have been crucial lessons to learn.

Also, India for the fourth time in five years, has been ranked as the most attractive nation for retail investment among 30 emerging markets by the US-based global management consulting firm, At Kearney, in its eighth annual Global Retail Development Index (GRDI) 2009. India remains among the leaders in the 2010 GRDI and presents major retail opportunities. The government of India is now discussing about allowing FDI in multi-brand retail.

With an aim to cull out and share the best practices that are worth replicating and considering that Indian retail is on the growth path again, the strategic focus for the retail industry is on how to increase consumption levels. In line with it, the Retailers Association of India (RAI) organized its 3rd two-day ‘Retail Leadership Summit’ in Mumbai, at the Jamshed Bhabha Theatre, NCPA from January 20-21,2011with the central theme titled as ‘UNLEASHING INDIAN CONSUMPTION POTENTIAL’.

Retail Leadership Summit focussed on creating a vision for modern retail and eminent speakers from global and Indian retailing organizations shared their experiences and best practices with the outside world at this common platform.

Apart from above,RLS 2011 provided a platform, where Indian and International business leaders shared their thoughts, interacted and ideated on ruling practices and proven solutions from the world over. The summit had sessions on various formats of retailing, including hypermarkets, luxury retailing, multi-channel retailing, visual merchandising and store design, food and entertainment retailing, investments in retail and home and furnishing. It gave various industry verticals a chance to meet retailers, develop sustainable relationships and win new partners.

Leaders Perception

RLS 2011 is a convergence point for all those who are part of the Indian retail industry. Let us jointly discuss methods to drive consumption, as we expand our business across India and showcase to the world that Indian retail has arrived. – Kishore Biyani,Group CEO Future Group.

I am overwhelmed to see the kind of dignitaries from India and across the globe, who will be sharing their experience at RLS 2011. In my last 20 years of being associated with Indian retail, I have never seen so many retailers under one roof. As retail continues to grow at a frenetic pace, customers’ choices are becoming global. RLS 2011 undoubtedly becomes a platform for understanding retail best practices that can drive consumption-BS Nagesh , CCA and Chairman, Shoppers Stop Ltd.
