It still performs the same basic function, but todays tinplate is also stronger, convenient to carry, tamper-proof and environmentally sound.By far the largest application of tinplate is in packaging and it is ideally suited for this purpose, by virtue of it being non-toxic, light in weight, strong, corrosion resistant and easily formed, soldered and welded; it also provides an excellent printing surface. The tin coating has a low melting point, possesses lubricant qualities and imparts a good appearance. Cans made from tinplate are easy to handle, dispose and store. Tinplate is primarily used for packaging foodstuffs and beverages, but it is also used in containers for oils, grease, paints, powdered, polishes, waxes, chemicals and many other products. Aerosol containers and caps and closures are also made from tinplate. »Q. Why should we recycle tinplate? Recent concern for environmental issues surrounding the use of raw materials, packaging waste and recycling has put all forms of packaging under close scrutiny. There are three main reasons why we should send our tinplate cans to be recycled: 1.To reduce our demands on the Earths limited natural resources (iron ore, l      ");

Tinplate is a naturally excellent packaging substrate with credentials that make it very versatile. As a true packaging material, Tinplate provides ultimate protection to the contents through its awesome barrier properties that disallows any air, water or light to enter. The rationale behind developing this product was to provide a user friendly box to help consumers organise the storage of medicines and carry with them in style. Consumers will also find this product useful in storing medicines at home Solution 2 : Mosquito Coil Box Mosquito menace is not something new and there is always the lurking danger of fatal disease like Dengue, etc. While repellants have started coming in very attractive plug in models their efficacy is still questionable. What effect a coil can bring mats cannot. Further people / housing societies etc throw a lot of outdoor party very often and in such cases it would not be practical to use the mats. Using coils on the other hand is very effective but there is a small danger of someone especially children getting burnt by the coil. In order to benefit from the advantages of a coil and at the same time make it more safe and user friendly a unique but simple pack was thought of and the result was a Mosquito Coil Box. It has a unique see through plastic lid allowing the beauty of the product inside to be seen. Solution 4 : Wine Box Drinking and gifting of wine has now increased in popularity in India. Being a more healthy drink Indians have started showing a propensity to consume more wine. But does it really look classy gifting wine in a cardboard box? Certainly not. An attractive packaging solution was conceptualised to make gifting of wine more sophisticated. To meet this need a cute and child-friendly toy bucket was designed which could hold small toys and also act like a beach bucket or even as an innovative return gift. Whats more the pack can be used very successfully to pack delicious sweets and chocolates. Solution 6 : Cookies Tin In most houses when cookies / biscuits are bought they either need to be consumed immediately or they tend to lose their crispiness. Alternately they are stored in plastic containers which tend to smell. This led to the thought of developing a simple but aesthetically appealing pack to store cookies / biscuits / cakes etc in the kitchen. While the stainless steel container is functionally suitable it is both expensive and has low shelf appeal. To fill this gap a unique see through tin with a handle to make carrying convenient was developed which is both high in aesthetic value and very affordable. It certainly will enhance the beauty of the kitchen. Solution 9 : 3-Tier Can This Can originally developed for packing three different varieties of Tea had won international award in 2006. However the uniquely innovative design of the can made it a versatile product. We wanted to position this product as a general storage container and see the response. The can was aesthetically modified with plain silver body and a black lid which resulted in a classy combination appealing to the eye. Solution 8 : Octagonal Decorative Can Formability and Printability have always been key attractions of Tinplate. Keeping this fact in mind we introduced an octagonal shaped can attractively printed in an auspicious combination of Red and Gold and positioned it as a decorative storage product. It was an instant hit with many consumers grabbing it. home>> ©Tinplate Promotion Council All rights reserved. Developed & Managed by VOYAGERS     ");

Thanks to its unique magnetic properties.  Mechanical extraction of steel packaging from mixed waste is highly cost-effective and can easily be automated. As steel scrap is a vital ingredient in all steel-making processes, there is always ample demand for recycled steel. Only one packaging material has the following sustainable credentials to offer : Steel is made from two of the earth’s most abundant natural resources: iron ore and coal Steel is 100% recyclable and sustainable, and recycled steel is an essential ingredient in the production of new steel markets for steel scrap are virtually unlimited using scrap to produce steel reduces the amount of raw materials required and provides up to 65% energy savings more than half of the steel we see around us has already been recycled from scrap Very little steel is disposed of in landfills due to the positive economic value of scrap. Steel Making - An Energy Efficient Process CO2 emissions per tonne of crude steel output are 50% lower than 40 years ago. Today, steel producers use the most sophisticated energy and gas management systems in their processes to optimize use of energy : gaseous by-products are used as fuel, replacing primary energy thermal energy in cooling water, exhausted gases, and residual products is, to a high degree, recovered for use elsewhere Steel Making - An Efficient Use Of Resources For the primary production of steel for packaging, the following metal and mineral resources are essential: iron ore, coal and limestone. The history of packaging could not be complete without paying deserved tribute to the Tincans. In the late 18th century, Napoleon’s army, which had suffered more from malnutrition than by actual combat, offered 12,000 francs, to anyone who could develop a way to preserve food for the military on the battlefield. A French confectioner, Nicolas Appert, after 15 years of research, took home the prize in 1809. He discovered that the application of heat to food in sealed cans preserved the food from deterioration.Based on Nicholas Appert’s method of food preservation the packaging of food in sealed airtight tinplated wrought -iron cans was first patented by an Englishman, Peter Durand, in 1810.Beginning 1814, canned foods were sent to distant British colonies and were greatly favoured. Demand of Tincans grew exponentially during world war -II © Tinplate Promotion Council All rights reserved. Developed & Managed by VOYAGERS     ");

Although these issues are complex, individuals and policy makers must still make choices, and how those choices are understood will have a long term strategic impact on politics, business, public and social issues.The news media are vital to this process. The way they analyze and translate complicated environmental issues can contribute to more informed decision making and that is where Environmental Journalism plays a critical role.World over, growing population, along with urbanization and industrialization has placed significant pressure on the infrastructure and natural resources. Issues like air pollution, global warming, water contamination, increasing pesticide content in food are affecting each one of us. This has led to increasing importance of protecting the environment and its resources. High level of environment awareness is there in Western countries and issues related to environment get required attention, however, in India it still has long way to go.Though, Environmental journalism in India began in the 1920s, but that valuable phase is forgotten. What is remembered and lauded is the environmental journalism of the 80s, when academics, NGOs and social scientists took on the cause. But this was the period during which the debate on the environment actually receded from the mainstream into technical and obscure journals. However, the recent developments of pesticide in bottled water and Carbonated Soft drinks (CSD), germs in chocolate etc have once again brought Environmental concerns into public focus.The corporate sector is emerging as a critical player in Indias development process. Given this expanding role, the corporates have to live up to new expectations from society, one of which relates to the impact of the corporate sectors activities on the environment.
